Q&A: Any chance a swollen left supraclavicular lymph node (Virchow’s node) could NOT be cancer?

Question by LateRain: Any chance a swollen left supraclavicular lymph node (Virchow’s node) could NOT be cancer?
I don’t have any other symptoms or any other swollen lymph nodes. The only complicating factor is that I had a root canal on a back tooth on the left side of my mouth and had a subsequent infection, so I guess that there is some obscure chance that this could be related to the infection I had in the tooth/gum after the root canal was done–except that everything I’m reading says that this particular lymph node doesn’t drain that way.

I also wonder is whether it really is my lymph node? The swelling is between the top of my shoulder and my clavicle . . . I can tell that this side is more swollen than the other side. Now it feels like my collarbone itself is larger on that side. It isn’t tender, but it aches at times. (because I’m poking at it?)

I have upper GI problems for almost ten years (GERD, etc) so obviously I am concerned about pancreatic or esophageal cancer. My CT scan is on Sunday, but I’m going nuts waiting. I would love to hear that it could be something else!
PS I was on clindomycin (sp?) for a week, then on 875 mg of Augmentin for ten days. I had just finished the first round of antibiotics when I noticed the lump.

chances are it is NOT cancer, especially given the history of past infections. If you told me that your mom and dad and both grandparents had died of lymphocitic disease I may be more concerned, but i’d rate your chances of it being cancer at about 3%

My husband has a swollen ear, sore neck, chest cold and swollen lymph nodes? What could it be?

Question by caxo76: My husband has a swollen ear, sore neck, chest cold and swollen lymph nodes? What could it be?
My husband has been complaining for the last few years that he has all these lumps all over his body, all in the places where your lymph nodes are. Today his ear swelled up, his neck has too. His throat hurts, head hurts, and was having some trouble breathing. He went to the doctor and they said it was just an infection, but I am worried about the swollen/hard lymph nodes as my father just recovered from Melanoma and Lymphatic Cancer. And help to ease my fears would be greatly appreciated.

Hey im so sorry to hear that this has happened :( i am a Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma stage 2 survivor to nearly 2 years :) and me and my family know how tough it can be believe me there are so many people in the hospital you can talk to maybe even other cancer patients. im only 16 so im so so sorry i dont feel comfortable with giving out my information. i will be honest with you. its going to be hard but as a parent you need to to positive for her and be there with her no matter what! if she has even the slightest similar treatment to me she is going to need a lot from you and it will be tough for you i watched my mother and father go through that and i feel very bad now but i know you will do anything for her :) but seriously go to a social worker in the hospital or go through you local GP and ask for guidance etc someone to talk to because there are people that are more experienced than me at talking about individual cases :) i was out of it for most of it. but just reassure your daughter that be positive and when things get bad push through it. if she is feeling low make her busy she doesn’t have to make so much effort into doing something just something simple like crafts or making phone calls to friends :P if she wants something e.g food ( because she will crave it ) give it to her!!! i know that i craved some crazy things and when we want it we wont give up till we get it i know it sounds bad and we are sorry for it afterwards :) but to make this better for you and make you feel more involved with helping would daughter be right there for her by her side no matter what take it as a bonding experience. it will get better and your daughter will get through it. turning a world upside down and be flipped the right way again.. things will never be how they use to be and what people call normal but that is when you and your family have to recreate a new normal :) take the positives out of it :) if she loses her hair make fun with it :) dye her hair a goofy color before cutting it and even before you shave it completely ( if you decided to shave it some let it fall out on its own ) cut funny styles :) i dyed my hair bright red and made Mohawks etc it made it fun :) also if she becomes uncomfortable with being bald get her bright beanies, bandannas again make it fun! :D also see this as a way for your family to become stronger!! and to meet new people! i know its not fair when something like this happens but i believe everything happens for a reason.. me… i haven’t found that reason but i know there is one out there i just haven’t looked for it yet. oh i forgot. as a parent you need out time get a friend or family member to sit with her and you go get a coffee or sit in a room and just have a good cry! trust me you will need it x i am so sorry again this is all i can do my prayers and wishes go out to you and your family x ♥ tell you daughter that i say be strong and be proud of who she is and what she looks like and dont give a damn what people think!!! people will stare and you know what you do stare back ten times as hard baby cause we are all beautiful!!!! ♥ good luck and remember its OK to be feeling the way you will feel :) i know she will make it

Cutting to cure cancer and ‘the limits set by nature’

Professor Tom Treasure (UCL Clinical Operational Research Unit) Surgeons look back and see the expectations of their predecessors exceeded, and obstacles to progress once thought to be insurmountable, bypassed as a matter of routine. But in cancer surgery there have been some notable reversals. Selection of only the most favourable cases and the need to accompany operations with chemotherapy and radiotherapy must raise doubts about how effective surgery itself is in controlling cancer. In this lecture, to mark World Cancer Day, Professor Treasure describes research findings and changes in practice that indicate that the limits of cancer surgery may have already been overstepped. He poses the question: when our present day efforts become history, how will cancer surgery be judged by future generations?

Strange Feeling in Neck? Thyroid Nodule?

Question by Abbey C: Strange Feeling in Neck? Thyroid Nodule?
Occasionally I have felt this strange sensation in my throat, usually after taking ibeprofen and for a while I thought that was the cause. But tonight my allergies were bothering me and I took a benadryl and it happened again. It’s in the area where the thyroid is, and it happens when I swallow. It almost feels like something’s in there or that that part of my neck is swollen or something. For the past two months, also, I’ve had this chest rash that the doctor gave me this stuff for. We don’t know where the rash came from. It went away and today it came back. I know the thyroid can get cancer, but I’m only 17! Do you think This could be a nodule? How serious are benign nodules in the thyroid? Is the rash another symptom? If you could, please answer all of those questions.

Best answer:

Answer by jackie m
A thyroid nodule is mainly an inflammation due to the thyroid hormone being irregular – few years ago I had a lump on my neck and eventually a scan showed it was thyroid nodules and i thought they meant cancer but was told no cancer there and then I ws given medication for under active thyroid but my problems were weight gain and no matter how hard i tried to lose the weight it didn’t go, I was later found to be type 2 diabetic. Your rash has nothing to do with the thyroid and if you did have something serious it wouldn’t come and go like yours does, I feel it is connected to your allergy as my daughter has an egg allergy and has had same symptoms as you and she cannot take ibuprofen as that sets her allergy off because she also has asthma and paracetamol is only pain killer she can take, she is an adult, I think you are worrying over nothing, Good Luck

A New Look at Peripheral Tolerance, or, Good Genes Behaving Badly

Air date: Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: Understanding the pathogenesis of T1D should facilitate the development of novel disease biomarkers and therapeutics that can accomplish a stated goal of NIDDK, to block T1D progression before complete  cell destruction. The major emphasis placed on disease associated genetic mutations or polymorphisms to understand the genetics of T1D has failed to advance either understanding of T1D pathogenesis or to identify therapeutic targets. Recent studies from the Fathman lab have demonstrated that tissue- and disease-specific changes in mRNA expression, rather than DNA variants, may underlie the progression of T1D. Work to be presented emphasizes the importance of studying the control of tissue-specific gene expression in relationship to the pathogenesis of T1D. By combining their expertise in T1D research with their established preclinical models and patient samples/tissues from their collaborator, the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes, nPOD www.jdrfnpod.org, Fathman and colleagues have both demonstrated a potential defect in peripheral tolerance in NOD mice that has homologies in T1D patients and have demonstrated that appropriate immunotherapy may overcome this defect The NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide

Q&A: Is cancer still a possibility?

lymph cancer symptoms signs
by Ruth Flickr

Question by Char: Is cancer still a possibility?
I had a lymph node surgically removed about two months ago. The results showed there was no malignancy, but that the lymph node showed “reactory” signs (so it’s reacting to something).

Well I still have swollen lymph nodes all over my body (neck, armpit, groin) and I have many other continuous symptoms. I have mild fevers almost every day, I have abnormally heavy menstrual periods, my skin is very pale, and I get shortness of breath and heaviness in my chest when I move around. Is it possible for me to have some type of cancer, even though the lymph node biopsy from 2 months ago showed no signs of malignancy?
